What is an E-Bicycle?

  • Know your Bicycle
What is an E-Bicycle?

When it comes to E-Bicycles, India has seen a rapid growth in this market, particularly in the last two years (or less!). The increased awareness and subsequent demand for e-bicycles in the country is what led to this growth. This is paved way to a rise in local manufacturers producing E-Bicycles that exude performance, while being economical and efficient. So, what is an E-Bicycle?

Features of an E-Bicycle

An Electric Bicycle or an E-bicycle is a bicycle that is equipped with an electric motor which assists the rider while pedalling by providing additional momentum. These bicycles come with features that commonly include:

  • A top speed of 25 kilometers per hour.
  • An average mileage of 40-50 kilometers per charge.
  • An average charge time of 2-3 hours.
  • Lithium-Ion batteries that are durable.
  • A digital monitor/ speed-control unit.
  • Auto Brake Cut-Off sensors, for additional safety.

    Types of E-Bicycles

The centric concept of an E-Bicycle is that it is powered by a battery source. That said, there are quite a few sub-categories of E-Bicycles, namely:

  • Pedelec (Pedal Electric Cycle), or pedal assist bicycles use a system where in additional power is supplied only when pedalling. The level of power provided can be set, there are usually three levels i.e. Low, Medium and High.
  • Rear hub motor driven e-bicycles typically use a motor that is placed on the hub of the rear wheel and powers the rear wheel, thus enabling additional momentum. This is the most common type of motor-driven e-bicycles in the market.
  • Throttle enabled e-bicycles are powered by a throttle-for acceleration (similar to that on a motorbike). These type of e-bicycles do not require pedalling when the throttle is engaged, thus making them a popular choice for commutes.
  • Crank driven motor e-bicycles power the bicycle through the drivetrain, allowing for a more stable and balanced distribution of weight and power. These kind of e-bicycles are more expensive, and thus less common in India.
  • Battery

E-bicycles today are equipped with Lithium-Ion batteries which are durable, rechargeable and capable of delivering higher amounts of power. The batteries on e-bicycles are mainly of two variants -

  • Detachable batteries, which are placed externally on the frame. These batteries can be detached from the bicycle, charged and then put back. They are convenient in terms of usage and portability. However, they could add a ‘bulky’ look to the overall appearance of the bicycle.
  • Integrated batteries, which are placed inside the bottom tube of the bicycle frame. These kind of batteries are non-detachable and built-in and require that the whole bicycle be placed next to a charging point. Charging this type of battery, if you do not have an external power source, would mean carrying your bicycle to a charging point indoors. In terms of appearance, these bicycles look more ‘streamlined and compact’ than those with detachable batteries.

    Gearing options

Regardless of the kind of assist provided or the type of battery on the bicycle, e-bicycles can be either single-speed, 6/7-Speed or 21-Speed. While single-speed bicycles maybe more straightforward to use ,especially since the motor helps with cadence control, multi-speed e-bicycles enable you to use the bicycle without the motor and control cadence as required using the gears.

    Conclusion

So, if you are looking for a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly option for commutes and exercise - an E-Bicycle might be the direction to go. The increasing popularity of e-bicycles has led to several brands selling impressively spec’d bicycles at a competitive price point.
