She started her Journey in Perth, in July 2018, and cycled across Australia to Brisbane, through the outback. She then flew on to Wellington, New Zealand from where she cycled from the North to the South of the country. After covering Australia and New Zealand, she flew to Vancouver and cycled from there to Halifax. Following this was Europe where she commenced at Ireland and rode through Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Russia. From Russia, she flew to India to cover the last 4,000km of her journey. She will be going back to Australia to complete the record.
Cycling into Kolkata on the 23rd of December, a young Indian’s dreams of becoming the fastest Asian to circumnavigate the world became true. Vedangi Kulkarni, a 20 year old from Pune cycled a distance of 29,000 kilometres in 159 days, covering 15 countries, to earn this title. She started out on this journey at 19 and turned 20 while on her ride. Her ride was a completely self supported ride, starting at Perth where in she covered more than 80% of the ride alone.
To cycle the globe alone and self-supported is no easy task by itself. However, what speaks volumes of this young girl’s determination and resolve is that despite having encountered weather extremities, grizzly bear chases, visa issues and being robbed at knife-point, she trudged on to achieve what she set out to do.
Vedangi’s parents, who funded majority of her ride, have been by her side through her entire journey offering her the moral support and strength to complete it. They will be with her when she finishes her ride in Australia.
