TOKYO OLYMPICS - ROAD RACE PREVIEW

Tokyo Olympics - Road Race Preview

Cycling has been a part of the of the Olympic Games since the first edition of the Modern Olympics in 1896. However, women’s road events were only introduced at the Los Angeles 1984 Games. Although Olympic Cycling was originally restricted to amateurs, professional Cyclists have been able to participate since Atlanta 1996, a decision that increased its popularity. The Men’s Road and Women’s Road Races are highly anticipated this year with the best of the best taking part in what can be termed as one of the most challenging routes in Olympic History.

Men’s Road Race – 24th July 2021

The Men’s Road Race is the first Race in Tokyo which is scheduled for the 24th of July 2021. The race is scheduled to start 7:30am Indian Standard Time. The Race will see 130 Men take the start on Saturday from 23 countries take on a challenging 234km course with 4,865 metres of climbing. The race starts at Musashinonomori Park and ends at the Fuji International Speedway with five major climbs. The Riders to watch out for in this race are:

  1. Tadej Pogačar – Slovenia
  2. Primož Roglič – Slovenia
  3. Greg Van Avermaet – Belgium
  4. Wout van Aert – Belgium
  5. Rigoberto Urán – Columbia
  6. Wilco Kelderman – Netherlands

Women’s Road Race – 25th July 2021

The Women’s Road Race is scheduled for the 25th of July 2021. The race is scheduled to start 9:30am Indian Standard Time. The Race will see 67 Women take the start line on Sunday take on a tricky 137km course with 2,692 metres of climbing. Similar to the Men’s Road Race, the Women’s race starts at Musashinonomori Park and ends at the Fuji International Speedway but with only 2 major climbs. The Riders to watch out for in this race are:

  1. Anna van der Breggen - Netherlands
  2. Annemiek van Vleuten - Netherlands
  3. Kasia Niewiadoma - Poland
  4. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio - South Africa
  5. Grace Brown - Australia
  6. Elisa Longo Borghini - Italy

Conclusion

The Men’s and Women’s Road Races at the Tokyo Games are going to be some of the most exciting races in recent history. Due to the challenging nature of the course, it will be interesting to see how the riders who ride for different World Tour Teams work together to achieve Olympic Glory.
