The M4000 is the latest edition of Alivio that Shimano released. The derailleurs are the most sought after components in any groupset. The Alivio comes in 2x and 3x combination in the front. These front derailleurs come in top swing and front swing type designs. The top and front indicate the way the cage moves when the gear is shifted. Top swings are common on MTB’s as they have a lower pivot and helps with smaller movements when gear transmissions.

The rear derailleurs on the Alivio are the most used on fast paced trail rides. These derailleurs are built with Shadow tech giving faster and precise gear transmissions. The rear derailleur on the Alivio comes in x9 combination. The M4000’s RD design is sleek, lightweight and extremely aesthetic with cutting edge design. The shifters on this come in 2 types, shifter/brake lever combination and just the shifter alone. This Rapidfire plus model comes with compatible shifters for 3x9-Speed combination with analog gear display indicators.

The Alivio M4000 groupsets also include cranksets, press-fit and octa-link bottom brackets, Disc brake specific front and rear hubs, freewheel/cassettes and disc brake calipers. These components compensate each other in performance. All the components are available separately or as a complete groupset. As much as the derailleurs and brakes these parts also contribute equally in enhancing the riding experience on MTB’s for fast paced trails and races too.

Conclusion

The Shimano Alivio groupsets are built purely for performance MTB’s. Unlike the Acera and Altus, the Alivio components can hardly be found on hybrid bicycles. The 9-Speed rear derailleurs giving combinations upto 27 speeds are a big boost for not just conventional MTB rides on trails but mainly useful for cross-country MTB rides and races with lots of climbs. The hydraulic disc brakes, lightweight/strong cranksets and octa-link bottom brackets are all top notch in quality and performance with latest tech and design in the M4000 series of Shimano’s Alivio groupset.
