The Vuelta a España 2019 is the third and final Grand Tour of the summer race season, and the Spanish race always provides exciting stages. This year the 21 Stage race which covered 3.272.2kms had 8 summit finishes and 2 time trials. Here a is a quick recap of everything you need to know about the Vuelta a España 2019.

YOUNGSTERS STEAL THE SHOW

With the a number of big names missing from the Start List this year, the Vuelta was the perfect platform for all the teams to showcase the younger talent. 8 Stages were one by riders under the age of 25. Tadej Pogačar from UAE Team Emirates ages 20 won the White Jersey in the Young Riders Classification, he also won 3 stages and finished 3rd in the General Classification.

THE RISE OF TEAM JUMBO-VISMA

Team Jumbo-Visma over the last couple of years have been building a team of strong riders and over the last 2 years have been favourites in the Grand Tours. At the Tour de France 2019, Team Jumbo-Visma had a strong showing with Steven Kruijswijk placing third in the GC and the team also won 4 Stages including the Team Time Trial. At the Vuelta 2019, The Bianchi powered team came in as favourites for the Vuelta a España 2019 and they stuck to that tag with Primož Roglič securing his first Red Jersey with and overall time of 83 hours 7 minutes and 14 seconds.

IT ISN’T ALL ABOUT RACING

Racing at the Grand Tour isn’t always serious. Riders do have some fun while in the peleton. The 2019 Vuelta a España 2019 proved just that with with Burgos-BH’s Jesus Ezquerra made Stage 21 memorable with him riding up to his Team Car with his girlfriend in it and proposing to her. The 28 year old had informed the broadcasters about his intentions and made sure they captured the proposal.

    The end of the Vuelta a España marks the end of the Grand Tour season. The 2019 season has been an exciting one, with a number of riders performing at their best, aggressive and tactful racing and the rise of the young riders. The 2020 Grand Tour Season is definitely going to be exciting with the return of Chris Froome, Riders in new teams and of course new and faster bicycles.
