Q&A with Shiven Aerohawk

A mechanical engineer by qualification and a daredevil by profession. Meet Shiven Aerohawk, a 21-year-old professional all-round cyclist. Sponsored, and successful at 21 years, supreme right? We got the opportunity to interact with this young athlete, and here’s what he had to say.

1. If you had to describe yourself in one sentence - what would it be?

“With eyes on the finish line, mind on the top spot, feet stomping on the pedals, I’ll continue to rip this trail, doesn’t matter how technical it gets.”

2. When did you get into cycling?

I don’t remember when I started with cycling (mostly commuting) but my first participation in any event was in 2012

3. When did you realize you wanted to get into mountain biking, professionally?

It was in 2014 that I got the opportunity to be a part of a Sponsored team. In 2017 I started riding as a professional athlete for Cannondale, powered by Track & Trail.

4. Have you ever looked back on your decision of being a professional mountain biker?

I look back at it every day, every time I’m on the bicycle and every single time I feel grateful for the opportunities that came along.

5. Tell me about your training regimen, and how you keep up with training on a regular basis.

My training includes a lot of interval training, and I prefer exerting those intervals indoor on a turbo trainer. A typical training week looks like 5-6 days of on bicycle workouts out of which weekends would be endurance rides, and other days will be spent indoors. Apart from on the bicycle training, I try to include Strength training workouts at least 3 times a week.

6. What part of your training have you found works for you, but might be different or unique from your teammates or other cyclists?

I prefer short volume High Intensity type of training with a lot of HIIT involved throughout the week rather than a lot of endurance work, which seems to be working great for the goals that I have set.

7. Who do you look up to in cycling?

I am a big fan of the sport and there are so many qualities in all different athletes that I admire. I look up to Nino Schurter, Henrique Avancini, Jaroslav Kulhavy.

8. What has been your best race, till date?

It has to be Scott MTB Championship, Mysuru where I outsprinted K Kiran Kumar Raju

9. What has your most challenging experience been, so far?

Epic 17K Sikkim, 2018 where we raced up to an altitude of 5200m!

10. Were you faced with challenges when it came to taking up mountain biking/ xc biking professionally?

Luckily it has been sailing smooth for me on all fronts and I have been getting great support from family.

11. What are you currently training for?

MTB National Championships to be held in October in Pune.

12. Do you have any go-to nutrition tip for pre, during and post riding?

Having a Carb Filled meal like oats/muesli 2-3 hrs. before riding. A gel/Banana every 45 minutes, and 500Ml of water mixed with an electrolyte every 1 hour, Post ride, Protein for recovery.

13. What do you do when you are not on the saddle?

I am passionate about photography and videography and have recently started to make vlogs. Apart from this I like to watch TV series or movies in my spare time.

14. Had you not decided to become a professional mountain biker, what would it have been for you?

I always wanted to be a part of the Defence Forces, If not cycling, It would have been that, never compromising on the thrill quotient.

15. What has been your most favorite experience, till date?

Riding down Churdhar Peak with friends has been one of the best adventures I had on bicycle.

16. If you were to choose ONE trail/route to ride on for the rest of your life - what would it be?

The Churdhar, for sure.
