Indian National Road Cycling Championship 2019 - Review

The 24th edition of the Indian National Road Cycling Championship was held in Bikaner, Rajasthan from the 13th to the 16th of November 2019. With Road Racing gaining popularity across the Country, the National Championship saw the highest number of participants with 760 participants in across the Senior, Junior and Sub Junior Categories. Across the 3 days, the competition was fierce, and action packed. Here is a quick round up of what went down at the National Road Cycling Championships.

INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIAL

An Individual Time Trial (ITT) is a road bicycle race in which Cyclists race against the clock. Starting times are at equal intervals, usually one or two minutes apart. The starting sequence is usually based on the finishing times in preceding races with the highest ranked cyclist starting last. The results from the ITT were:

TEAM TIME TRIAL

A Team Time Trial (TTT) is a road-based bicycle race in which teams of cyclists race against the clock. The winning team in a TTT is determined by the comparing the times of (usually) the fourth-finishing rider in each team. The results from the ITT were:

MASS START

A Mass Start is a race format where riders start simultaneously and the first to cross the finish line is declared the Winner. The Mass Start at this years Nationals was the most anticipated and the Race didn’t disappoint. The results were

CRITERIUM RACE

A Criterium or Crit is a race consisting of several laps around a closed circuit with points on offer at the end of every lap. The winner is determined by the one with the most number of points at the end of the race. The Crit is a race meant for the sprinters. The results were:

50KM MENS CRITERIUM RACE

1st - - Krishna Nayakodi – SSCB – 24 points

2nd - - Satbir Singh – SSCB – 20 points

3rd - - Shreedhar Savanur – RSPB – 19 points

30KM WOMENS CRITERIUM RACE

1st - - Sonali Chanu – RSPB – 23 points

2nd - - Monorama Devi – RSPB – 16 points

3rd - - Swasti Singh – Odisha – 8 points

Conclusion

The 24th edition of the Indian National Road Cycling Championship concluded with the RSPB and SSCB taking top honours. The Event was well organized by the Cycling Federation of India and the RSPB. With the Road Cycling gaining popularity across the country, the National Championships in the coming years will definitely be the Main Feature in the Racing Calendar in the Country.
