How To Maintain Your E-Bike

When it comes to E-Bicycles, the leading concern is it’s maintenance. After shelling out a fair bit to purchase an E-bicycle, many are concerned about increasing costs to keep the bicycle well-maintained. Good news! Making a routine of a few habits when it comes to ‘looking after’ your e-bicycle, will keep your bicycle in tip-top shape while keeping costs at a bare minimum. Read on for tips to maintain your E-bicycle.

KEEP THE BATTERY WELL-MAINTAINED

To start with, Lithium Ion batteries are fairly low maintenance while being long lasting. When it comes to battery maintenance, firstly - charging your battery regularly has proven to extend the battery’s lifespan, or get the most out of it. Secondly, avoid storing the battery in extreme environments - either too hot or too cold, for an extended period of time. Thirdly, avoid keeping the battery plugged into the socket for long after it is fully charged. And lastly, ensure that your battery is fully charged before you unplug it - removing it before it is at 100% could reduce its lifespan.

DRIVETRAIN MAINTENANCE

Just like regular bicycles, an E-bike’s drivetrain needs to be properly cleaned and well-lubricated for optimal functioning and performance. A clean drivetrain can improve the quality of shifting, increase the lifespan of the chain and gears and keep the drivetrain noise-free. Without regular cleaning and lubricating the chain could rust and wear down, meaning that it will have to be repaired or replaced. Follow these steps to clean the chain:

  • Clean out the links in the chain with an old toothbrush and some warm water.
  • After they’ve been cleaned, completely dry them with a clean cloth.
  • Use a wet/dry lubricant for bicycles to lubricate the cleaned links. Do not use WD-40 or other such oils - it could do more damage than good.
  • Wipe off any excess lube with a clean cloth or paper napkin. Excess lube will attract dirt and dust causing the links to accumulate chunky bits of grime.

  • TIRE MAINTENANCE

Keeping your tires well-inflated will ensure smooth functioning of the bicycle, allowing it to roll over surfaces with ease. Additionally, well inflated tires save energy used, battery and personal effort. The recommended PSI range is marked on the side of the tires, try to stick within the range to avoid over or under inflation. Secondly, ensure that the treads of the tire are in good shape, worn down treads can result in reduced traction and make the tire easily prone to punctures from sharp objects on the road. If you feel the tires are wearing out, get them replaced.

    BRAKE MAINTENANCE

Brakes are perhaps the most important feature of a bicycle as they ensure safety when slowing down or stopping. Hence, keeping them maintained and functioning optimally should not be overlooked. Different types of brakes require different kinds of maintenance, the main areas of focus however being the brake pads/ points of contact with the tires and the cables. Ensure that the brakes and brake cables on your bicycle aren’t wearing out. Usually a difference in braking performance is the first sign of them wearing out which will require a look at.

    PROFESSIONAL MAINTENANCE

Taking your E-bicycle to a store to have it looked at by a team of professionals is an essential part of keeping your bicycle well-maintained and running smooth, for a long time. While it is not essential to have the bicycle looked at by professionals for regular maintenance, a routine service schedule - every 6 months to a year based on your usage will go a long way in keeping your bicycle in the best shape possible. Professionals offer a range of services from a basic tune up, cleaning and check up to specific, more advanced service options.

    Conclusion

Regular maintenance of your E-bicycle will ensure that you get the most out of what’s on offer. A smooth running bicycle ensures optimal performance on the saddle, and longevity of your bicycle’s lifespan. Follow the few tips as mentioned above to keep maintenance costs on the lower side, while getting to familiarize yourself with the functioning of your E-bike! That said, if you suspect that there is something going on with your bicycle that needs to be professionally addressed, avoid trying to fix it at home and take it to the nearest E-bike professional for a service.
