91 or Ninety One’s parent company Alpha Vector are driven by their goal of reconnecting you with the outdoors through products that appeal to the lifestyle and fitness aspirations of India's youth. We got the opportunity to test ride Ninety One’s Genio 27.5T MTB and here is what we thought.
Weight: 15.9 kgs
Category: Fitness/Commuting/Leisure
The Ninety One Genio 27.5T is built on a performance focused hardtail Alloy frame. This frame has a bulky outlook to it with a triangular top tube with the flat side on top. This frame is built using 6061 Alloy and the first thing which stands out during the ride is that it does feel a bit heavy. But the weight is equally distributed on the frame which makes it easy to climb inclines and also lift it and carry it up the staircase. The riding posture was comfortable thanks to its frame geometry.
The stock front suspension fork comes with a smoothly working 80mm travel and a suspension lock-out feature to help ride faster on flatter terrains.
The Ninety One Genio 27.5T is a sturdy looking hardtail MTB. The frame design is unique and eye catchy along with bold graphics which makes the Genio stand out. The internal cable routing on the frame is a great addition to a Bicycle at this price. The ‘91’ logo on the head tube seems to be a thick sticker rather than it being embossed or heat printed on the frame. The bicycle which I test rode came in a full Blue primary colour with Gold as the secondary colour for graphics and text. The matte finish paint job was smooth in quality.
The 27-Speed drivetrain on the Genio 27.5T is a combination of a 3-Speed Ltwo in the front and an 9-speed Ltwo as the rear derailleur along with a Hyperglide 9-Speed Cassette. Shifting was good with hardly any lags felt during the test ride. The drivetrain is controlled by Ltwo trigger shifters, which were positioned well and easy to use. The performance of this Ltwo drivetrain is very similar to the performance of a Shimano entry-level drivetrain.
The Genio comes with SN Simaers branded Hydraulic Disc brakes. These brakes were solid in stopping power and felt balanced to use even when jamming the brakes. The levers were also lengthy and had an easy spring action which made it possible to operate using just 2 or 3 fingers.
The Alloy handlebar on this MTB had a slight raise from the middle which gave the rider a comfortable riding posture.
The Ninety One Genio rolls on a pair of 27.5” x 2.2” DSI tires which are attached to Double Walled Alloy rims. The treading and size of the tires were ideal for moderate trail riding and for rough urban roads as well. The rolling resistance was fast and the tread pattern provided enough traction on wet roads as well. The stock saddle looks and feels well cushioned to give the rider sore free and comfortable ride even on the roughest of rides.
This is a hardtail MTB built on an Alloy frame which has the perfect combination of strength and a comfortable riding geometry. The 27-Speed Ltwo drivetrain is entry to mid-level in comparison to Shimano and provided decent gear shifting performance. The entry-level Hydraulic Disc brakes along with the 27.5” x 2.2” DSI tires made this Bicycle roll over roughest of surfaces and stop quickly and in a balanced manner. Priced at Rs.26,999(as on 30th June 2021) the Ninety One Genio 27.5T is an ideal choice for anyone looking to buy an MTB for flat trail rides and to tackle rough urban roads.
