Montra Blues 1.2 Disc (2018) Frame, Fit and Comfort

The Montra Blues 1.2D has been made using a 6061 Alloy frame which is not only lightweight but also durable and agile. The frame has been welded with precision and high quality work. The top quality welding is evident in the smooth and neat appearance of the edges. The frame has an ergonomic geometry, allowing for a relatively upright riding position that ensures performance and comfort. The frame houses mounting options for two water bottle cages. Additionally, it has mounting options for mudguards, in the front and rear, as well as a pannier rack at the rear. This makes this the perfect bicycle for long distance riding and touring.

This bicycle comes equipped with a front suspension fork. The SR Suntour NEX suspension fork comes with 50mm travel and a hydraulic lock out. The suspension works well to ensure absorption of shocks felt while riding on rugged, uneven terrains and over potholes. At the price point of this bicycle, a hydraulic lock out feature is a big plus and adds to the versatility of the bicycle.

Montra Blues 1.2 Disc (2018) Design

When it comes to the design department, Montra hit the jackpot with the Blues Series. The Montra Blues 1.2D comes in a primary colour of glossy black with sky blue detailing. This year’s model has a lot more blue on the frame, from last year. The detailing on the frame is in a combination of blue and white with the same colour combination being present across the bicycle in decals on the frame and a matching black and blue saddle.

Montra Blues 1.2 Disc (2018) Gearing

The Montra Blues 1.2D is a 24-Speed bicycle that is equipped with a Shimano Altus front derailleur and a Shimano Acera Rear Derailleur. The shifting is controlled by Shimano Altus shifters. The derailleurs worked smoothly, with no hint of delays or lags when on the test ride. The wide range of gearing options makes tackling inclines a lot easier, making this bicycle a solid option for tours. The gear transmission was on point, leaving no room for complaints in this department.

Montra Blues 1.2 Disc (2018) Brakes and Steering

The Montra Blues 1.2D comes equipped with Logan LG-300 Mechanical Disc brakes with 160mm rotors at the front and back. The brakes worked efficiently, ensuring powerful braking while staying stable. Both Interval braking and abrupt braking felt stable and safe. The Promax XL-90 Alloy Brake Levers were placed well within reach, requiring only two or three fingers to operate. The brake levers required only a light pull to ensure effective braking. These brakes work effectively on both wet and dry surfaces.

The XMR Alloy 620 mm handlebar on the Montra Blues 1.2D, ensures a comfortable ‘open-chested’ riding position. Additionally, the width of the handlebar enables superior control and maneuverability of the bicycle in traffic and crowded riding conditions. The handlebar grips were fairly cushioned and worked well to ensure minimal transfer of vibrations from the handlebar to the hand and arms while riding, however I feel that the padding on the bar grips could have been a smidge more for that added comfort.

Montra Blues 1.2 Disc (2018) Tires

The Montra Blues 1.2D comes equipped with fast rolling Kenda 934 700x35C hybrid tires. These tires were lightly threaded, ensuring great grip while turning at sharp corners. Additionally, they ensure added stability and control in wet riding conditions and on uneven terrain.

The XMR Comfort saddle was comfortable with a hint of extra cushioning, which makes it extremely well suited to long distance riders and tourers. The width of the saddle was perfect, accommodating one’s sit bones with ease.

This year’s Montra Blues 1.2D has seen a few minor changes across departments, while keeping in line with the 2017 version of the same bicycle for the most of it. For instance, there has been no change in the actual componentry used in the braking department, however the brand of the brakes used has changed from C-Star to Logan. Another change in the componentry used is the SR Suntour NEX suspension fork on this year’s model as opposed to the SR Suntour M3010 suspension fork on last year’s Blues 1.2D. A considerably significant change is the paint job of the frame, where in this year incorporates more blue on the frame than its last years counterpart, given the model name, I feel that this is rather apt. Overall, the performance of this bicycle remains unaffected and the bicycle makes a great option for cyclists looking for a performance hybrid bicycle capable of long distance riding and touring.
