Merida is a Taiwanese Bicycle manufacturer with engineering and design from Germany. Merida has grown over the years to become one of the top Bicycle brands with its presence in major Bicycle races around the world. Merida was one of the earliest International Brands to bring in their 2020 range to India. We got the opportunity to test ride the Merida Crossway 20MD (2020) and here is what we thought.

The perfect all-rounder cross hybrid bicycle for riding on both smooth and rough roads.
The Merida Crossway 20MD (2020) comes with a lightweight 6061 Aluminium frame. This frame is built using the Techno Forming System or TFS. This system helps maintain a low weight while still providing good strength. This system also allows for innovative shapes in the frame, which helps keep the geometry required in balance, thanks to the top notch moulding process. The geometry has the perfect blend of aggressiveness and comfort.
The SR Suntour NEX HLO front suspension fork comes with a minimal yet smooth 63mm travel. The suspension lockout was easy to use and useful to make the fork rigid for added comfort on flatter roads.
The overall weight of the bicycle is 14.3 kgs and comes in multiple frame sizes
The Crossway 20MD which I test rode came in a X’mas Red frame with Black as the secondary colour for graphics and text. The slightly curved top tube along with the thin seat and chain stays made the bicycle look sleek. The matte finish paint job was of top notch quality and enhanced the colour shade immensely. Internal cable routing would have further enhanced the aesthetics of this bicycle.
This bicycle comes in 2 colour variant; Silk Titan Silver Grey with Black and X’mas Red with Black graphics
The Crossway 20MD (2020) comes with Shimano Tourney at the front and Acera at the rear as derailleurs. These mid-level Shimano Hybrid derailleurs worked smoothly during the test ride on rough urban roads when riding in traffic and on flyovers. Both the front and rear derailleurs shifted quickly and without any lag. The 24-Speed drivetrain gave a wide range for efficient climbs and quick acceleration.
Shimano’s 24-Speed Tourney/Acera drivetrain are mid-level Hybrid/Trekking Bicycle components providing smooth shifting performance for commuting and long rides
Promax’s MTD 3.0 Mechanical Disc brakes handle the braking performance on the Merida Crossway 20MD. These brakes were powerful and had a fast response time when suddenly braking in traffic and even on fast turns. The Shimano brake levers were lengthy and required only 2-3 fingers to engage.
The Merida Comp handlebar was 660mm in length and had a slight 30 degree raise from the middle to give a comfortable riding posture. The adjustable raiser stem was useful in making the rider comfortable or aggressive.

The Crossway 20MD (2020) comes with Kenda K1171 700x40c tires with Merida stock Alex rims. These tires have an impressive tread pattern to give good traction on Urban roads. The wheel set on the whole was lightweight and did contribute to keeping the weight of the bicycle in check.
The Cross Sport Saddle on this bicycle was ergonomically designed making the sit bones place on the widest points of the saddle and thus making it comfortable during long rides even on bumpy surfaces. The suspension seat post took vibrations of the surface and made the ride smoother on bad roads.
Good traction on all types of roads
This is a Performance Hybrid Bicycle packed with high end components. The suspension lockout along with smooth gears and fast rolling tires make for a comfortable ride amidst traffic on both smooth and rough roads. Priced at Rs.36,990 (as on 20th March 2020) the Merida Crossway 20MD (2020) is an ideal performance packed Hybrid Bicycle.
