Cosmic bicycles have been a great example of how Indian brands can manufacture quality bicycles. They have been trying hard to constantly deliver better quality bicycles to compete with the foreign bicycle brands in the market. MTBês have always been a familiar line of bicycles for Cosmic and with this new launch they aim to it to the next level. We got the opportunity to test ride the Cosmic Spazio 2.4 2016 and here is what we thought.
The Cosmic Spazio 2.4 2016 is built around a 6061 alloy frame. It is important for MTB frames to keep their weight in check and Cosmic have done a commendable job of it. This was achieved mainly due to the high quality welding around all crucial parts of the frame. One major stand out in terms of geometry is the conjoint top tube and bottom tubes at the beginning of both which makes the front half of the frame strong and capable of taking hard hits from the trails.
The Suntour XCT front suspension fork on the Spazio 2.4 proved to be an integral part of this hardtail bicycle during the test ride. The usable suspension travel was easily a minimum of 70mm which is impressive. The HLO hydraulic lockout for the suspension to make it a rigid fork for flat roads is a good feature. But the lockout component wasnêt the best of quality, be anything more than gentle with the lockout cap and it might just come out.
From a brand catering mainly to budget bicycle needs, it is important to keep the bicycles looking at its best irrespective of its price. The Spazio 2.4 2016 comes in just the single colour variant as of now which is the full black with forest and green and ash grey shades all over the bicycle. The curve on the bottom tube at the beginning and the joint build with the top tube makes the bicycle look sturdy. The slight curve in the chain stay and seat stay adds to the aesthetic looks of the bicycle
The Spazio 2.4 comes with a Shimano Altus front and rear derailleur for the gearing. The 24 speed drive train performed well during the test ride with no real niggles. The 3 x 8 speed Shimano Acera shifters were in a comfortable hand position. The trigger shifters were quick and smooth went compared to the thumb shifters which required more push than what it usually needed to change the gears. These choice of gears seems to prove that Cosmic really wants to take up the MTB experience to the next level. The speeds are enough to tackle mid-level trails and quick and short climbs with ease.
Any moderately fast trail with marginal inclines will have the need for disc brakes and the Spazio 2.4 MTB does provide one. The Tektro Mechanical disc brakes at the front and rear have made this bicycle more versatile. The brakes had a good balance and was no lag in stoppage while engaging them. Sudden halts had slight imbalance and screech but nothing which will affect the ride experience.
The Zoom MTB handlebar on the Spazio was wide enough to be in optimum control of the bicycle whilst on trails. There was a slight raise to the handlebar from the middle which made my body position less aggressive during the test ride.
The 26êê x 2.1êê Kenda MTB tires was bulky and strong, perfect to roll over moderate trails. These strong pair of tires are well supported by the Double walled Cosmic alloy stock rims. The treads were all bulky and hence the traction of these tires on the trails are the least of your worries. It rolls over dirt without any difficulty and the 26êê size makes the tire good enough for those occasional rides inside the city. The Cionlli saddle on the Cosmic isnêt the perfect MTB saddle. The width was perfect but the smoothly rounded edges might tend to make you slip of the saddle while pedaling faster and moving from side to side on the saddle. The overall ride quality of this bicycle was comfortable and fast on trails.
Getting in to the world of trail riding can be intimidating. But the first and the most important step is to get the right bicycle for it. The Spazio 2.4 is a budget bicycle with will still not lack on basic performance needs which a trail would require. There are a few value for money components which cannot be found in most similarly priced MTBês. If you are looking to get in to trail riding and are serious about finding the median in between budget and performance then the Cosmic Spazio 2.4 2016 is the bicycle for you.
