Cycle to Work Challenge in Bangalore

If you live in Bangalore, own a bicycle and commute to work everyday, using your bicycle could earn you ‘green credits’ in recognition of your effort to promote a cleaner and greener environment. Read on for more details.

Bangalore’s ‘Bicycle Mayor’ Sathya Sankaran is set to introduce a Bike to Work Challenge, commencing October 2018. A pilot version of this challenge is set to commence in September. This undertaking aims at encouraging bicycling as a form of commuting, while also emphasising the need of the hour to reduce one’s carbon footprint. This challenge will be open to companies and teams of participants that represent a company, wherein the participants will be given a month’s time to register on the app that has been developed and launched for this challenge. At the end of six months, the team with the highest number of people commuting to work by cycle, with the highest distance covered, will be presented with a trophy and ‘green credits’. If a company is unwilling to register, employees from the company can come together and register as a team. Additionally, a chosen ambassador will mentor the participants throughout the challenge.

This initiative will also collect data on the number of cyclists in the city, the popular routes across the city and the average distance covered by a cyclist. Mr. Sankaran stated that this data will help in making policy decisions, wherein the government can use the data to provide cycling tracks and improve the infrastructure, especially across the commonly used routes. iCycle, a bangalore based company, will be collaborating with this project by providing bicycles on rent for this initiative.

Conclusion

So, Bangaloreans, what are you waiting for? It is time to pick up your bicycles this October and be a part of the Bike to Work Challenge. If you do not have a bicycle already, rent one, or if buying a bicycle has been on your mind for a while - choose your perfect pair of two wheels from a wide range available here.
