The Hero MTB Himalaya is touted to be the toughest mountain biking race in India. This year the Hero MTB Himalaya steps in to its 11th edition which kick starts on the 26th of September.
Hero Cycles and the Himalayan Adventure Sports and Tourism Promotion Association (HASTPA) have come together for a second consecutive year to organize this race which has become a flagship event in the Indian cycling calendar.
The race route through the picturesque Himalayan mountains cover 600 km at 3250 mt above sea level with a total elevation gain of 15, 000 mt over a period of 9 days. Starting with 30 riders in the first edition Hero MTB Himalaya has grown to accommodate 80 participants in 2015. This year there are about 40 international professional cyclists from 15 countries competing in this race. There is also a contingent of riders from the Indian armed forces taking part in this event.
The latest news is that the race organizers HASTPA have decided to show their support to the riders from Nepal which was hit by an earthquake earlier this year by giving away 5 free entries for participants from Nepal. The 5 riders who are well known in the MTB circuit are Ajay Pandit Chhetri, Gopal Narayan, Buddhi Bahadur Tamang, Raj Kumar Shreshtha and Rajan Bhandari who are all set for this high level race coming straight out of their grueling training sessions in the mountainous terrains of Nepal. Besides this the winners of this race will also contribute a part of their prize money to the Nepal Rescue Ride to Rescue (NCRR) which was started by a group of Nepal National Team Mountain Bikers to raise funds for victims of the Earthquake.åÊ
