NiteRider is an American brand headquartered in San Diego, California that is dedicated to designing high quality performance lights for extreme sports that are waterproof, very bright, lightweight and hands free. We got an opportunity to review one of NiteRider’s urban commuter lights, the Lumina 1100 Boost, and here’s what we think.
The NiteRider Lumina 1100 Boost is designed for the more serious cyclists who need more illumination and visibility than the urban commuters and recreational cyclists. Powered by a 6000K single CREE LED, the Lumina 1100 provides a strong and wide beam of light, providing enough illumination for night rides and highway commutes. With a longer range and a wide-spread beam, the Lumina 1100 Boost provides much more illumination that any of its prede-cessors.
NiteRider has ensured that a light of this caliber should have a strong build quality, and has designed the Lumina 1100 Boost to conform with the international FL1 Safety and Quality standards in terms of lumens, run time and water resistance. The 7 different run modes are di-vided into 4 different steady modes and 3 blinking modes, with NiteRider’s signature Daylight Visible Flash (DVF) technology incorporated in them, which enables it to be used as a safety light in broad daylight also. They have a runtime capacity from 1 hour (on the 2x brightens Boost mode) to 20 hours (on the strobe mode).
As the NiteRider Lumina 1100 Boost packs quite a punch, it needs a strong power source to provide a good runtime, and is aptly fitted with an in-built 3.7V Li-ion battery. The battery can be charged via a USB port on the base of the light that comes along with a waterproof, airtight rubber cap. The rubberized power button on top of the light also doubles up as a low power indicator by turning from green to red when the power goes below 20%. One long press switches the light ON/OFF and a single click toggles between modes. The 2x brightness “Boost” mode can be activated by a quick double-click of the button. Pressing and holding the power button for a total of 7 seconds can activate the button lock.
The Lumina 1100 Boost weighs around 172 grams, and to support this weight, the light comes with a secure, screw-on handlebar mount into which the light can be slid in or out. The light also has the provision to be mounted on a helmet, with the helmet mount that is sold sep-arately. Charging the Lumina 1100 takes a shorter time than expected, thanks to its new ‘Intel-liCharge” technology that reduces the charging time to half, and takes just around 3 hours for a full charge. With the custom engineered collimator lens to maximize the spread of the beam, the Lumina 1100 Boost is brighter and wider than what is expected from a 1100 lumens light.
Overall Rating
The NiteRider Lumina 1100 Boost is a light that conforms to international quality standards, and yet comes at an affordable cost, which makes it almost unbeatable in its segment.
