Montra recently launched their 2019 range of bicycles. The Hybrid range has always been versatile and performance focused in Montra. The Downtown was an instant hit when it first launched a couple of years back. We got the opportunity to test ride the Montra Downtown (2019) and here is what we thought.
Weight: 13.6 kgs
Usage: Commute/Fitness
The Montra Downtown (2019) comes with a 6061 Aluminium Alloy frame, same as the 2017 and 2018 models. The tubes on the frame were thin but had enough material at crucial places, which can take in vibrations of the surface. The riding posture was comfortable and the lightweight frame made pedaling easy on inclines.
This Hybrid bicycle comes with a Steel rigid fork. This does add a bit of extra weight at the front but also makes the fork strong enough to handle rough roads.
This hybrid bicycle which I test rode came in a full Black primary colour with Blue and White as the secondary colours for text and graphics. Black with Blue was the initial colour of the Downtown when it first launched and it is good to see this colour combination make a comeback. With a smooth matte finish this year, the colour combination definitely looks premium and aesthetic.
The gearing department in the Downtown is equipped with Shimano Tourney at the front and rear as derailleurs. These 21-Speed derailleurs are the most basic gearing set up you could find. During the test ride these derailleurs worked well with not much lag. The Shimano Tourney trigger shifters were simple and easy to use.
Montra have gone with the exact same braking components as last year in this 2019 model. The Logan Mechanical Disc brakes were balanced and powerful. Both jamming the brakes and interval braking was safe to use while maneuvering in traffic and when turning.
The XMR handlebar was of perfect length at 600mm. It gave the rider an open chested riding posture which was comfortable.
The Wanda 700x35C tires were sleek while still having enough traction on both flat tarmacs and bumpy roads. The double walled Alloy rims from XMR supported the tires well to make them a lightweight wheelset for fast riding. The XMR saddle had the perfect length, width and cushioning to make the ride sore free.
Overall Rating
This is a comfortable to ride Hybrid bicycle with a lightweight Alloy frame. The aesthetic design and matte finish paint job made the bicycle look premium. Logan’s Mechanical Disc brakes were powerful and quick. Wanda’s 700x35C tires were fast rolling and gave good traction on urban roads. Priced at Rs.16,575 (as on 27th July 2019) the Montra Downtown(2019) is an ideal choice for anyone looking to buy a bicycle for fitness and commuting.
