Hero’s Octane range is full of performance focused bicycles for both urban roads and moderate trails. With a lot of new models released over the last few months, Octane now has a huge range of bicycles to choose from. We got the opportunity to test ride the Hero Octane Elk 27.5 and here is what we thought.

A performance focused hybrid bicycle for fast urban commutes and long distance fitness rides.
The Hero Octane Elk 27.5 is built on a lightweight 6061 Alloy frame. This frame has thin tubes and smooth welding which makes the frame lightweight. This helps in acceleration and inclines on urban roads. The ground clearance near the bottom bracket is high which makes it safe and easy to ride over bumps and speed breakers. The rigid Alloy fork was bladed in shape which reduces the weight at the front while taking in some amount of vibration of the surface.
The Elk is built on a lightweight Alloy frame and comes in a standard 18” frame size
The Elk 27.5 which I test rode came in a full Black frame with Red as the secondary colour for the text and graphics. The matte finish paint job was smooth and neatly done which made the simple colours look classy. The internal cable routing for both the front and rear derailleurs make the frame look neat and less clustered. The ass-saver mud flap attached to the saddle is not only useful to protect the rider from slush, it also looks stylish and compact.
The Elk comes in 2 colour variants; Black with Red and Black with Grey/Green
The Hero Octane Elk is equipped with a smooth shifting 2x9-Speed Shimano Alivio front and Altus rear derailleur. The performance and mid-range component mix was smooth in shifting and was ideal for quick shifts to accelerate and also for inclines. The Shimano Acera RapidFire Plus shifters were easy to shift with clear and dynamic gear indicators.

The JAK branded Hydraulic Disc brakes on the Elk were powerful and balanced to use during the test ride. These brakes were perfect for quick stops when riding amidst traffic on both wet and dry roads. The brake levers were lengthy and easy to use with just 2/3 fingers.
The flat handlebar was 640mm in length with the perfect height which made the posture comfortable for the rider.
The JAK Hydraulic Disc brakes were powerful and balanced to use on urban roads
As in the name of this bicycle the Elk rolls on a pair of Chaoyang branded 27.5” x 1.75” tires. These tires were fast rolling on City roads. The surface of the tires was smooth with barely any treading. While these tires are meant for smooth roads, some treads would have helped get additional grip on occasional rough patches.
The Hyper-Fit stock Saddle was ergonomically designed for soreness free cycling on commutes and long distance rides.
The Chaoyang 27.5” x 1.75” Urban tires were fast rolling
This is a pure Urban Bicycle with a lightweight Alloy frame and a comfortable riding posture. The 2x9-Speed Shimano Alivio/Altus drivetrain was unique in this category and shifts seamlessly. The JAK branded Hydraulic Disc brakes were powerful and balanced to use. Priced at Rs.29,850(as on 23rd December 2019) the Hero Octane Elk 27.5 is an ideal choice for anyone looking to buy a Bicycle for Urban Commutes and long distance fitness rides on smooth roads.
