Frog is an Indian Bicycle brand. Their range includes MTB and City Bicycles for Men, Women and Children. They also have Superhero themed bicycles. This fairly new entrant to the Indian bicycle market has come out with an extensive range with numerous designs and colours. We got the opportunity to test ride the Frog Raptor 26” and here is what we thought.
Weight: 17.3 kgs
Usage: Leisure/Fitness
The Frog Raptor is built around a hardtail Steel frame. While Steel is known to be heavy, this bicycle had a good distribution of weight, which was evident when riding on both flats and inclines. The geometry was standard and comfort focused with a mildly slanting top tube.
We can say this bicycle is urban focused and not full-fledged trail friendly by the functioning of the suspensions fork. The Zoom branded suspension on this bicycle has a minimal 50mm working travel which is just sufficient for bumps and pot holes.
The Raptor from Frog which I test rode came in a bright Neon Green as the primary colour with Black as the secondary colour for the graphics and text. The Black/Green saddle with a huge Frog text is definitely eye catching. The matte finish paint job was top notch in quality. The Green brake and gear cables were a nice touch.
The Raptor 26” comes equipped with Shimano Tourney at the front and rear as derailleurs. These are entry-level gearing components in Shimano’s MTB hierarchy and they performed to their limit during the test ride. On rough urban roads riding amidst traffic, these derailleurs were ideal for quick and short gear changes. The EZFire Shimano trigger shifters were easy to use and in easy reach from the handlebar grips.
This Urban MTB’s stopping power is handled by a pair of YinXing Mechanical Disc brakes at the front and rear. These brakes were powerful, safe and balanced on rough and smooth roads. Both interval and jamming of brakes felt in control when used during the test ride.
The Alloy handlebar on this bicycle was both comfortable and wide enough to give the rider an open chested riding posture.
The DSI 26’’ x 2.3’’ MTB tires on the Frog Raptor was heavily treaded to generate a lot of traction on rough surfaces. While the 26” circumference handles the fast rolling resistance the massive 2.3” width make sure the bicycle is stable and balanced on muddy and rough roads. The stock Saddle had enough cushioning to keep the rider comfortable on bumpy rides.
Overall Rating
This is Urban MTB with a bright aesthetic colour and design. The wide tires and Mechanical Disc brakes make sure the bicycle can handle fast rides on rough surfaces. While the bicycle comes in a standard 17”, the riding posture was comfortable. Priced at Rs.14,499 (as on 6th June 2019) the Frog Raptor 26” is an ideal choice for anyone looking to buy a bicycle for leisure rides and commutes on rough and smooth roads.
