Frog is an Indian bicycle brand. Their range includes MTB and City bicycles for Men, Women and Children. This fairly new entrant to the Indian bicycle market has come out with an extensive range with numerous designs and colours. We got the opportunity to test ride the Frog Munich 27.5” and here is what we thought.
Weight: 15.3 kgs
Usage: Leisure/Trails
The Frog Munich is built around a hardtail Alloy frame. The Alloy frame makes the bicycle lightweight while being strong and able to handle rough surfaces with ease. The geometry was standard with a slanting top tube which made sure the riding posture is comfortable.
This hardtail MTB comes with Zoom 389 front suspension fork with an impressive 80mm travel. This travel was smooth in working during the test ride and the mechanical suspension lockout feature was helpful in making the forks rigid for a smoother riding experience on flat surfaces.
The Munich 27.5” from Frog, which I test rode came with Blue as the primary colour with White and Burgundy as the secondary colours for the graphics and text. The Black/Red saddle with bold ‘Frog’ and ‘Munchen’ text is definitely eye catching. Even though the bicycle’s name is ‘Munich’, the frame’s top tube has it printed as ‘Munchen” (German for Munich). The matte finish paint job was top notch in quality. The blue brake and gear cables were a nice touch.
The Munich 27.5” comes equipped with Shimano Tourney TY 500 at the front and rear as derailleurs. These are entry-level gearing components in Shimano’s MTB hierarchy and they performed to their limits during the test ride. On rough urban roads and flat trails, these derailleurs were ideal for quick and short gear changes. The EZFire 21-Speed Shimano trigger shifters were easy to use and in easy reach from the handlebar grips.
This Urban MTB’s stopping power is handled by a pair of Zoom Mechanical Disc brakes at the front and rear. These brakes were powerful, safe and balanced on rough and smooth roads. Both interval and jamming of brakes felt in control when used during the test ride.
The Alloy handlebar on this bicycle was both comfortable and wide enough to give the rider an open chested riding posture.
The 27.5” x 2.2” MTB tires on the Frog Munich 27.5” were heavily treaded to generate a lot of traction on rough surfaces. The 27.5” circumference made it easy to ride over rough trails and urban roads. The stock saddle was wide and had enough cushioning to keep the rider comfortable on bumpy rides.
Overall Rating
This MTB is built on a lightweight yet strong Alloy hardtail frame which was easy to accelerate. The smooth 80mm front suspension fork along with a Mechanical lockout made this bicycle perfect for both on and off road rides. The 27.5” x 2.2” MTB tires were heavily treaded for rolling over rough terrains easily. Priced at Rs.18,599 (as on 4th July 2019) the Frog Munich 27.5” is an ideal choice for anyone looking for an MTB to ride on trails and urban roads.
