Cosmic is an Indian bicycle brand which has been flourishing in the economical bicycle segment for the past few years. With every new launch, Cosmic tries to do better with quality for a competitive price. Single speed bicycles are the bare minimum and the foundation upon which other bicycles evolved from. Comsic's single speed bicycle is the Jus Bike 26-1 Speed 2015. We got the opportunity to test ride this bicycle and this what we thought.
The Cosmic Jus Bike 26 - 1 Speed is built with a rigid steel frame. The geometry was basic and is not aggressive. The edges were welded quite smoothly with no extra material used. This made sure the bicycle's weight wasn't on the heavier side as expected on a steel framed bicycle. The stem is smaller than usual but it did play a major role in making the handling much easier. Both the fork and the seat stays have enough space between them and the tires which allows for a sleeker yet bigger tires for an upgrade.
The Jus Bike 26 - 1 Speed comes in 4 different colours, Red, Black, White and Blue. The bicycle which I test rode came in Blue. This dark blue colour had a nice sheen on it. The glass paint job was neat and covered the frame completely. There are a few accessories provided with this bicycle, front and rear MTB mudguards, bottle cage and bottle and a conventional metal U-lock which not only are useful but also contribute to the aesthetics of this bicycle.
The Jus Bike is powered by a single speed drivetrain. The 44x18T chain ring wasn't the smoothest on the pedals but that was the case only until you set the beginning cadence. After a few pedals it felt seamless. The steel cransket with the sealed bottom bracket contributes to the over-all pedaling experience of the Jus Bike 26 - 1 Speed. You wouldn't miss the gears if your usage is just for short distance commutes on flatter roads.
The braking department was taken care of by a pair of Alloy V-brakes at the front and rear. The brakes functioned well during the test ride on busy city roads and reacted well to sudden brakes.¾ Turning and braking wasn't the same though, mostly due to the less friction generated of the rims by the brake pads. The alloy brake levers were perfect lengthwise, making it comfortable to reach.
The steel handlebar on the Jus Bike had enough rise to make the rider's position commuter specific rather than being aggressive for fast riding. The grips weren't the most comfortable and had very minimal cushioning.
The Jus Bike rolls on a pair of 26'' x 2.12'' Wanda King tires. These are proper MTB tires, like the ones you would usually find on performance oriented hardtail MTB's. For a single speed commuter bicycle this might be a little heavy duty but that's not much of a difference when it brings grip and stability to the ride experience. The stock Cosmic saddle is no where near an ergonomical design. This is a well cushioned seat suitable for shorter rides. The over-all ride quality was a bit rattling on rough city roads but was fast and easy to ride around the neighboring streets.
Single speed bicycles have their limits and so does this bicycle. Even though the rigid steel frame did transfer a lot of vibrations from the road on to the palms, it wasnÈt painful or something which might make you stop riding. Smooth to pedal and with reliable brakes, the Cosmic Jus Bike 26 - 1 Speed 2015 is suitable for anyone with a tight budget looking to buy a bicycle for commuting purposes.
